““Since then your majesty and your lordships desire a simple reply, I will answer without horns or without teeth. Unless I am convinced by Scripture and plain reason- I do not accept the authority of popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other- my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe.” “Let the man who would hear God speak, read Holy Scriptures.” “The Holy Spirit himself and God, the Creator of all things, is the Author of this book.” “But be assured that no one will make a doctor of the Holy Scripture save only the Holy Ghost from heaven.” “There is not a word in the Bible which is extra cruem, which can be understood without reference to the cross.” |

John Newton If you are looking for evidence of the transforming power of the grace and mercy of God, John Newton is a prime example. Once a despicable slave trader, by God's grace he was transformed into a humble servant of God and man. It is to be at rest when nobody praises me, and when I am blamed or despised. It is to have a blessed home in the Lord, where I can go in and shut the door, and kneel to my Father in secret, and am at peace as in a deep sea of calmness, when all around and above is trouble. He described Ryle as "that man of granite, with the heart of a child. Charles Spurgeon, described him as "the best man in the Church of England." Another writer described him as a “theological vertebrate” who never suffered what Ryle called “boneless, nerveless, jellyfish condition of soul.” I found his book, Practical Religion, filled with solid spiritual food, the kind you have to chew on for awhile but when digested leaves a sweetness in the soul. I hope you are blessed by the following quotes from this challenging book. |
